What is a Report Text?
A report text is a type of text that presents information about something in a general way. This text describes objects, places, or phenomena based on systematic research, observation, and analysis. Its main purpose is to provide a complete and objective overview of the subject.
Often, a report text is mistaken for a descriptive text. The key difference is that a descriptive text focuses on describing specific things, while a report text generalizes things in a broad sense.
Characteristics of a Report Text
To distinguish it from other types of texts, note the following key characteristics:
- It uses the Simple Present Tense as it presents facts.
- It uses verbs that show action (e.g., walk, run) and verbs that show a state of being (e.g., is, are).
- It uses general nouns, such as "dogs" instead of "my dog."
- It uses technical terms or scientific language relevant to the topic.
- Its structure consists of General Classification and Description.
Structure of a Report Text
Every report text has two main parts that form its structure:
1. General Classification
This section contains a general statement that classifies or defines the subject to be discussed. Its purpose is to provide the reader with an initial overview of what will be described.
2. Description
This section describes the phenomenon, object, or subject in more detail. The description can include its parts, characteristics, habits, or qualities. This section is usually divided into several paragraphs.
Report Text Example: "Elephants"
Here is a simple example of a report text about Elephants:
General Classification:
Elephants are the largest existing land animals. They are mammals and belong to the family Elephantidae. There are two recognized species: the African elephant and the Asian elephant.
Description:
Elephants have several unique physical features. Their most distinctive feature is a long trunk, which is used for breathing, lifting water to drink, and picking up objects. Their large ears help them to regulate their body temperature. Elephants also have tusks, which are elongated incisor teeth, and they use them for digging for food and as a weapon. They are herbivores, eating roots, grasses, fruit, and bark. Elephants live in matriarchal social groups and are known for their intelligence and long lifespan, which can be up to 70 years in the wild.
